I was born in Tibet when one could walk around Lhasa without running into a single Chinese,
and grew up mainly in Britain, where I attended secondary schools during the era of the Beatles,
the moon landing and Vietnam. Returning to a Tibetan refugee community in India, I studied
Tibetan painting for two years, before arriving to the United States in 1974.
After Art school in San Francisco, I became an Art Director in New York for 16 years, and won
many industry awards, such as the Clio, Addy and the One show.
In the last few years, I've devoted more time to my artwork while also engaged in other projects.
I've designed several books on Tibet, created identity logos for Tibetan organizations such as ICT
and SFT and opened Tibetan restaurants in San Francisco and New York City. I've also had the
surreal and wonderful experience of acting in Martin Scorsese's film, Kundun, playing the role of
the Lord Chamberlain.
My paintings have been exhibited at galleries in Boulder, New
York, Santa Fe, Washington DC, Montreal, Zurich and Atlanta.
I'm privileged to be one of 75 international artists asked to create
a work based on the ideas of the Dalai Lama for a worldwide
exhibition in 2006.
I'm proud that a website I started a few years ago to enable
Tibetan artists to see each other's work, has now evolved into Mechak Center for contemporary
Tibetan art, a group working to create awareness for Tibetan artists and their work. We've
succeeded in putting on three exhibitions and symposiums on contemporary Tibetan art in 2005,
and are helping to organize a major exhibition and publication, featuring the work of artists from
both inside and outside Tibet for 2006.
I want to thank my art patrons in Europe and the US, whose support of my work has given
me the resources and encouragement to continue painting.
I live in Boulder, Colorado, with my wife and 7 year old son. The sky here is sometimes almost
as blue as the Tibetan sky.
